Preparedness Challenge: Week 22

This is your challenge for the week of May 25 through May 31.

Week 22

Make a copy of your living will. Place it behind your Medical Information tab in your binder. If you don't have a living will, I encourage you to get one. We recently purchased the software, Quicken WillMaker Plus 2008, to get our wills in order.

When shopping, purchase an extra five (5) pounds of cheese. Shred the cheese, then put in in your freezer. Don't forget to get some extra Parmesan.

Preparedness Challenge: Week 21

This is your challenge for the week of May 18 through May 24.

Week 21

This week, make a copy of your physicians names and phone numbers. Place the copy behind the Medical Information tab in your binder.

This week, while shopping, purchase safety items for your home. For example, matches, flashlights, batteries, and child proofing devices.

Preparedness Challenge: Week 20

This is your challenge for the week of May 11 through May 17.

Week 20

This week make copies of your health insurance ID cards. Place the copy behind the medical information tab.

While shopping, purchase some extra garden seeds. Corn, carrots, green beans, broccoli, peas, onions, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini, for example.

If you can't devote a large portion of land to a garden, try planting in containers. I don't know about you, but I am feeling like it is more and more important to learn how to be self-reliant. I get really overwhelmed when I think that 99% of my food comes from other sources besides my own hard work. I guess if one can live on raspberries and tomatoes, oh and some green onion and chives, then I'll make it. But, other than that, I rely partially on local farmers and heavily on the grocery store. It amazes me how our way of life and our livelihood has completely 180'ed since our farming ancestors. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy technology, but my computer, for instance, can't grow food to sustain me.

This year, I am going to devote some of my time to learn how to make my own soap, look more closely into purchasing my own chickens, and even purchase a soy milk maker. Heck, I might even be really adventurous and raise some sheep, shear their wool, spin the wool, color it with natural dyes, then knit the wool into lovely socks and sweaters for me and my loved ones.

Preparedness Challenge: Week 19

This is your challenge for the week of May 4 through May 10.

Week 19

This week, make copies of the prescription information (drug, dosage, etc..) of each member of your family. Place these copies behind the medical information binder tab.

Food Storage

While shopping, stock up on gelatin and pudding mixes. You can also check the local cannery for bulk pudding and dry-pack a couple of cans of it.

Good luck with the challenge!
